President John F. Kennedy gave an impassioned speech at Rice University, Texas, in which he tasked NASA with landing humans on the Moon by the end of the Sixties. They duly obliged, safely landing the late Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the lunar surface on 21 July 1969.
